Wildlife Photos

Nightime Visitors

I'd like to share these photos with our Highland Meadows neighbors. I live on Hackney, near the middle of our neighborhood and have two very small backyard goldfish ponds. They attract all kind of critters who are looking for a drink of water or perhaps a fish dinner, although my fish count has remained constant. The opossum visits often, I think, and we had a nest of babies in our largest tree two years ago. One night we went out and little beady eyes were looking down on us! When I let my dogs out one night just before midnight on 10/15/06, this opossum scrambled hurriedly from the pond area up to the top of the fence and froze there ("playing possum"). He didn't move for 20 minutes or so. The screech owl photos were taken on 12/19/06. He also posed for me as I got within about 4 feet of him snapping photos, and he never ruffled a feather. Screech owls are only about 8" or 9" in length--not very tall. He turned his head nearly all the way around numerous times. It's always a thrill to see a wild animal or bird "up close and personal!"
