The brown puppy (possibly a terrier mix) that Judy found on Cactus on Feb 23 has a new temporary home. This pup, who had no tags and no microchip, was never claimed by his owner. Judy, thanks for taking such good care of this little guy and for finding a temporary home for him.

The Briggs family on Flicker is adopting Sky, the little Siamese kitten who needed a new home. Sky will have another cat sibling to play with and a very loving family to take care of him. Congratulations to the Briggs' on their newest family member -- Sky is a very lucky little kitten!
Good news -- the DFW Dachshund Rescue Group has agreed to put the two pups found on Quail Run into their program. They seem to have some stringent requirements for people who adopt from them, so we feel confident that these two sweethearts will end up in some very loving homes.
Nancy and Tiffany attended the last Petwatch Summit on November 7, 2007 and the group is steadily expanding; this time we had residents of Oak Cliff in attendance, who are just starting a Petwatch program. Almost all the groups have an email notification process set up, but we are still struggling with neighbors who do not have online access. Future plans include developing a list of vets offices and animal related businesses who will allow us to post flyers for missing and found pets, since it is against city regulations to post signs and flyers along the street. We also discussed developing a comprehensive list of shelters and rescue groups who would be willing to take an animal when we do not have foster homes available, as well as a list of web sites for posting lost and found animals. Our plans are to continue to meet about every 3 months to support each other and assist new areas of town to get their own Petwatch Programs started.
Petwatch In Progress:
I have had a number of reports on found bunnies. If you know owner or would like to adopt a rabbit, let us know. Also, Oscar the dog is in need of a permanent loving home. Don’t forget we have a blog site now for up to date info. We do not send out emails to everyone everytime we post so please check the blog to check on an animal issue or email us at the address above. We are in need of more foster homes, so if you find an animal, consider what you will do with it, as you cannot count on a local volunteer all the time. We do have some old pet food and some pet supplies for those who do foster, tho we are not really equipped for bunnies!
Also, the coyote issue is being addressed in Dixon Branch with trapping being active in their area right now. Do be careful as the coyotes are obviously well adapted to our urban setting and have been seen on city streets day and nite and sometimes are in packs. Keep small children/pets safe! Become BIG with picking up small ones and yelling. Then call 311 immediately. Do not mess with their dens found in the creeks and let the professionals handle the wild animals.
I will be out of town for vacation mid July, so we are happy to welcome Tiffany Shaw to our Petwatch family who will be training on our Blog work soon and helping Nancy while I am gone! Have a great pet friendly summer! Karen

Thanks to Nancy Nance and Jennifer Costner who covered for me while I was on Spring Break last week. Unfortunately Jennifer will be leaving our area soon, but Nancy will continue with me in taking care of Petwatch.

He found 2 dogs in his yard; they are very friendly, in good condition and both were wearing collars, but no tags. One is a husky type of dog, gray and white, with one blue eye and one brown eye -- he's not sure about sex. The other is a large red male dog (about the same size as the husky) with medium length hair. His neighbor at Rolling Rock put them in his yard, but now they are beginning to fight with his dog and he's not sure how long he can keep them. The neighbor, Doug, called last night and said he that they're starting to fight more with his dog. He also identified the husky-type dog as a malamute. I talked to his wife this morning and she again said that they couldn't keep the two dogs and asked if we could find a foster home. She gave me their phone numbers to call if we find someone to take the dogs: 214-343-7177 PLEASE CALL PETWATCH IF YOU KNOW OWNER OR CAN FOSTER. THANKS!
STRAYS:
Caller saw two dogs in her yard this morning, a female beige pit bull, and a female reddish gold cow dog with pointed ears. They were running toward 9000 Block house, but ended up on the corner of Pelican and Whitewing (she followed them in her car). Neither had collars, and the pit bull seemed a bit aggressive, but they both came up to her car.
One other call late yesterday, from Sally at Eden Roc and Capri. She saw a stray male dog, the size of a grown lab. He was white with black spots, and had a blackish face, no collar or tags. Seemed friendly, but he would not let anyone get too close to him.
Sara left a msg that she saw two springer spaniels lose about 9:10 this morning. Both had collars and tags, and they raced across NW Hwy, through the Assembly of God parking lot, and into the woods behind the church. One was white with brown spots and the other was more liver colored.
Missing
My niece at, 600 block Coolair, was pet sitting for me yesterday, March 18, when my dog got away, about 3:30 p.m. She has no collar on, almost completely tan with an almost completely black tongue. Short-haired, 60ish pounds, spayed, perky stand-up ears, and her tail sticks up and rotates like a helicopter blade when she is happy. Thank you, Suzanne 214-388-8482

Sunday, March 11 a male black and brown spotted dog, dug out of its home on Pandora Circle. The dog is a possible pointer mix, small, short muzzle and wearing a purple elastic collar; very friendly and new to our neighborhood so he may have traveled quite a distance. Monday, 3/12 a 4yr old male poodle named "Sammy was reported missing. Black w/ silverish on back with a blue collar last seen at The Madison Apartments. Owner reports that the animal is very sweet and faints if he gets to hot. Has been missing for approx one month. If you see this dog please call his owner, Linda at (214) 363-8347.
SIGHTINGS
On Thursday, 3/15 AT 2PM Karen on Flicker reports “just saw a med. short hair dog black with tan markings on muzzle with collar and tags go up Pelican away from my house; couldn't catch it.” Jennifer on McCree reports same dog at “3:30 ran by our house, tried to catch him but he just kept running. Approx 40lbs I could see a blue tag but he was too quick for me to catch the color of his collar.”
On Friday morning around 8am, March 9, two large dogs were seen near Sonic at McCree and soccer fields and Sams.. one large blonde hound, white markings, and one large black shepard mix, one had a red collar.
On Tuesday, March 6 a black and white pit bull (no collar or tags) was loose at Grenadier and the Northwest Hwy. Service Road at 10am.He was checking gates, seemingly wanting to find his yard. Same dog was reported by someone else seen Tues pm at 8617 Hackney
Described as a pitbull mix, black/brown, white think fur around neck, white star on face and white muzzle.

A gray and gray and black medium size dog need a new home. Tess writes, “We have been trying to find a way to move with our little dogs. It is not going to work out and we must find a home for them. They are approximately seven years old and are litter mates. They came from an abusive home but have been treated well by our children. They are excellent with children and I honestly have never heard them growl. They are not excessive barkers. They tend to sleep a lot and like to lay with you. They like to take walks. They would be very happy with someone who is a grandparent who wants pets that will be tolerant of small grandchildren. They sleep in a kennel together at night. Deja is a female Chow mixed, between 9 months and 1 1/2 years that was found at Alpha and the Tollway. The founders rescued her from the freeway but cannot keep her. She's approx.30 -35 pounds with slate grey/amber eyes, very sweet and kind, and seems to be a quick learner. No collar and not micro-chipped. SUCCESS STORIES
On Saturday, March 10th Heather on Bacardi was reunited with her dog, Dixie, a blonde Cairn Terrier that escaped their backyard Friday night. Heather writes, “A nice neighbor kept her overnight and we were reunited Saturday morning!”
The Black and White Border Collie Mix that was found last week was reunited with his owner. Thanks Kara and Brett for fostering and Joyce and her family for helping!
Remember the cat, "Larry", that was reported missing a month ago? Well, amazingly, after being gone for nearly 4 weeks, he showed up back at home the other day, and seems to be just fine. (picture posted on Petwatch blog)

INFORMATION REGARDING RAT POISON
An HMNA pet owner wrote us this week with the following story to share…some info was edited for length…“I have used pet approved rat bait traps for years as there is a wooded creak area about 200 yards over from us and I have neighbors that free feed there dogs. Our dog, Bonnie, was able to get the boxes from under the bricks, shake the boxes in the five directions needed to get the poison bars out of the mazes and emptied both boxes. She ate 4 high strength rat bars. This common form of rat bait is the same a cumaden which is prescribed for stroke victims and heart afib. It stops the body from producing vitamin K which after approximately 5-7 days causing the blood to thin to the point of causing internal bleeding of the organs. The vet has never saved a dog from rat poison and was preparing me to have her put down. The blood work showed that she was not anemic yet so I decided to have an I V started with vitamin K and the vet also started her on antibiotics. After 2 days bonnie was coming back strong. She has improved daily and yester day she ran and caught the Frisbee at full pace. I think she will have a full recovery with little or no long-term lung problems. I have done some research on rat poison and found that it is very treatable if it is know that an animal or person has taken it. Because it takes 5-7 days to act, being aware is the key. Vitamin K is the antidote. It can be found in most pharmacies. I will keep some in my cabinet. The normal dose is 25 mg twice a day for dogs for 4-6 weeks. I believe it is 5-10 mg a day for humans. Rat poison is made with brown sugar coating and other sweeteners to attract rats. This was irresistible for Bonnie from what I have witnessed. It usually starts with a cough and low energy. This is usually misdiagnosed as respiratory infection and treated with antibiotics. As a rule 2 more days will pass and then it is too late. If I hadn’t paid attention Bonnie would not be here today. - Mike

Hey everyone, we have created a BLOG site that will hold our photos, all the current lost and found and much more. The new Blog account http://hmnapetwatch.blogspot.com will be the most up to date source for info on our lost and found pets. You can access the BLOG anytime you want to look over the postings.
You still submit your information as before, via email; petwatch@highlandmeadowsna.org, via the topcities website report forms; http://hmnapetwatch.topcities.com/. or via voicemail; 214-967-5210. Then a petwatch volunteer will post the Blog directly on that site. If it is urgent, we will send you a note on the current list service account.
We will continue to have our current HMNA website www.highlandmeadowsna.org, and the Petwatch website http://hmnapetwatch.topcities.com/. These sites will house permanent Petwatch info. The topcities account will be where anyone can access the forms for our Petwatch. You can register your pet, report a lost and found pet there, find pet tips and permanent info about our petwatch.
Lost and Found pets are still our primary concern, but we will continue to post Available for Adoption, Neighborhood Pet Info, Local Animal Events, Wildlife concerns, Amazing Animal Tails and Success Stories. If you would like to submit anything for our blog, please make sure you do NOT use inflammatory language, and make a note whether we can post your personal info or not. Typically we post first names, block names, and the Petwatch number, but you may allow us to use your phone number, email address etc..Keep in mind the BLOG can be read by anyone on the internet. We still will protect your privacy and encourage you to send in true neighborhood animal stories and local animal info with your byline. We hope this new format will make our Petwatch more efficient and user friendly.
