Neighbor Update on the small tan/blonde dog

11/9/07--Neighbor Update on the dog who seems to be 'jogging' all over the neighborhood, at least since around the beginning of October (over a month ago) when reports first began to surface. I've dubbed him "Fruit Loop." (See below.)
Sex/Size: Male; Small-to-medium sized; Wt: about 25 lbs.; no collar/tags
Color: Reddish-tan; has been described as tan and blonde; hair lays flat, not fluffy; full tail (looks very much like a fox)
Characteristics: Moves in a jogging manner; always seems in a hurry, moving swiftly; pointy nose and ears that stick straight up; very street-smart; will not have anything to do with strangers; likes Fruit Loops (or maybe that's the only thing that was available).
'Jogging Pattern': I am in the 8900 block of Hackney, between Quail Run and Rolling Rock and can see him out the front window when using my computer. I have seen him follow this pattern on a number of days, enough to believe it's his daily pattern. The timing is always the same: He goes north on Hackney from the NW Hwy. direction toward Rolling Rock between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. He goes back the same way, southward, from the Rolling Rock area toward NW Hwy. between 4:30 and 5 pm. (Makes one think he might be getting out after his family leaves for work and wants to arrive back home just before they get there!) I don't know what he does in-between those times, but apparently he keeps moving around quite a bit, given the number of sightings. He HAS gone back-and-forth at other times during the day, but he also sticks to this route in the morning and afternoons at those times.

The fact that he duplicates this same route and timing intrigued me, so I followed him twice last week. (Yes, I do have lots of other things to do but may be a bit quirky when it comes to loose animals. So bear with me...) He went south on Hackney, east on Cactus, to south on the Grenadier/Hackney alley, to Pali Palms. He saw me waiting for him on Pali Palms, stared at me a bit, turned around and reversed his direction back down the alley, cutting through a yard to Grenadier. He turned right on Cactus where Grenadier dead-ends. He stopped both days to grab a few bites in the front yard of a house in the 11100 block of Cactus where the resident had thrown out Fruit Loops for the birds. He then cuts through the yard of the 2nd house to the Cactus/Grenadier Ct. alley, coming out in the 8600 block of Grenadier near Grenadier Ct. This morning, 11/9, I followed him north from Hackney to Rolling Rock to see where he might go in the other direction (Yes, I honestly did....) He turned left (west) on McCree at the RRock/McCree 4-way-stop, then turned around and came back eastward on McCree, crossing RRock, heading toward Jupiter. He saw me and cut through a yard to the alley, where he gave me the slip (as always). He's very street-smart and savvy...knows how to keep moving and get away from watchful eyes. He has no intention of letting a stranger get near him, even with a bowl of food.

Maybe this dog's family recently moved here and he got lost and can't find "home." Or maybe he's just a stray, perhaps from the nearby apartments or was left behind by a resident. A Lanett Circle resident thinks she saw him on 10/3 coming out of the creek area; if so, he's been out and about at least a month or more. Although he doesn't look thin or unfed, I've put a pan of dog food and water out near the sidewalk, thinking I might entice him to hang around. I'd especially like to get a photo of him so we could post it on the PW blog.

If he tries to cross one of our major streets, he could easily get run over; also, cold weather is coming. If you know of a neighbor who has a dog of this description, ask them if he is secure inside their fence. Please report all sightings to PWatch and try to contain him, only if you feel it is safe to do so. As always, don't take any risks with a strange animal, even though he might be of the smaller variety and enjoys Fruit Loops.
